BANGALORE: The residents of Vignananagar and HAL Airport ward may finally breathe a sigh of relief as the old sanitary pipelines in their locality and the neighbouring ward are being replaced with new ones. However, there are no ‘free lunches in life’, for the new pipelines to be laid, the residents were literally locked inside their houses as the roads in front of their homes were dug to lay the pipes.Residents of Jagdish Nagar 5th Main Road are the latest entrants to join the list of many others who were confined to their houses due to the work.A portion of this locality falls within the jurisdiction of HAL Airport ward.A resident of Jagdish Nagar said on the condition of anonymity that though the work was finished within three days, those three days were not easy on them.“We could not leave the house. No vehicle could commute on the road. All we could do was wait until the work was completed. But we are glad that the work is over now,” he said.According to the local corporator of HAL Airport ward Siddalingaiah, half the work has been completed. “There is still some more work that needs to be done. The main sanitary pipelines are yet to be laid out.Once that is done we will be able to proceed at a much faster pace.According to the plan the work should be completed in the next six months,” he said. The corporator added that Cauvery pipelines are also being laid in the area.Meanwhile, Vignananagar corporator Geetha Vivekananda revealed that since her ward and HAL Airport ward share a common boundary, new sanitary pipelines are being laid in both the wards.“The approximate budget for work in both the wards is `25 crore.Wherever we had to dig the roads we had informed the residents of the work so that they could make prior arrangements to reduce the inconvenience. In most places the work has been completed and the land has been filled. However, it will take some time for the soil to set before the BWSSB can begin repairing the roads,” she informed. The corporator also said that according to the tender, it is the BWSSB’s responsibility to ensure that the roads are redone. She said, “The written document clearly states that the civic body must ensure that the road’s condition should be maintained after the work as it was before the task was undertaken. It was a global tender that was called for the work and two companies are currently working on relaying the pipelines.”
