CHENNAI: The Annual awards instituted by the MAC Charities in the name of Dr Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, Dr MA Chidambaram Chettiar and Dr AC Muthiah, have been announced for this year. The Dr Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Award for outstanding contribution to Tamil language and literature will be awarded to Tamil scholar Dr SV Shunmugam, a former Director of Annamalai University. A visiting professor at the University of Reading, UK, for one year. Dr Shunmugam is currently a visiting scholar at the Mysore Central Institute of Indian Languages, Pondicherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture and Chennai International Institute of Tamil Studies. He has authored 29 books, of which two have been awarded by the Tamil Nadu Government. Kavignar Vaalee will be conferred the Dr MA Chidambaram Chettiar award for excellence in fine arts. This five-time winner of the Kalaimamani award has penned more than 15,000 film songs and dialogues for Tamil cinema and has been awarded the Padmashri in 2007. The Dr AC Muthiah Award for excellence in first-generation entrepreneurship has been awarded to industrialist MP Ramachandran, Chairman and Managing Director of Jyothy Laboratories. Having started his company in 1983 with a capital of Rs500 and five workers producing one product - Ujala, the company has now grown into a Rs400 crore company with multiple products being exported to 17 countries.Each award carries one lakh Rupees cash and a citation in a silver casket. The award ceremony will be held on October 12 at the Raja Annamalai Mandram, to coincide with the 93rd birth anniversary of industrialist and sports administrator Dr MA Chidambaram.
