Srinagar: A major of 71 Armoured Regiment, currently posted with 8 Rashtriya Rifles, was shot dead by a jawan on Monday night after being reprimanded for using a mobile phone.
The incident took place in the Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Sources said the incident occurred on Monday night when the jawan was using his cellphone during duty hours.
The major broke the phone's screen while trying to confiscate it. He scolded the jawan and warned him of being marched up to the Commanding Officer next day. This made the jawan angry and he fired at the major from behind.
Sources said a Court of Inquiry has been ordered by the Army.
