An international network marketing company’s state distributor was arrested by a team of Crime Branch, Economic offenses Wing (EOW) units from Kozhikode and Palakkad at Padivattom here on Friday.
The arrest took place following an investigation carried out by the Crime Branch regarding the operation of the company in the state. The arrested is Sajeev N Nair, 44, Kedaram House, Maradu.
He is the state dealer of Monavie, a US-based network marketing company which functioned like a money- chain firm by selling an energy drink worth Rs 2,500 per bottle.
It was on Friday that the Crime Branch officials, jointly under the supervision of Kozhikode Crime Branch OCW, SP P A Valsan, raided the office and warehouse of the Monavie at Padivattom and Kalamassery.
“We raided and sealed the warehouse and the office of the Monavie company in Ernakulam. The company has nearly thousand members in the state,” Valsan, said. “ Monavie’s India head office is in Chennai and it is run by a person Ramdas. The company has been marketing energy drink for the last one year,” he added.
To become a member of the company one has to pay Rs 4500. A member would get a bottle of energy drink worth Rs 2500. When he adds each additional member in the network he will get a commission of Rs 600, he said. “About a month ago we received complaints from two members of the company alleging that they were not paid the promised commission. We have been closely monitoring the operations of the company,” Valsan, said.
The Crime Branch produced the accused before the Kozhikode Chief Judicial Magistrate and he was remanded in judicial custody. The Crime Branch will seek his custody soon.
