Marathi manoos or Hindutva: Sena fumbles
In the last four decades the party has shifted focus more than twice, detractors say Sena is confused about its ideologies.

Mumbai: Shiv Sena, which once fought for the cause of Maharashtrians in Mumbai, shifted focus to the Hindutva issue but now it is again trying to go back to it's Marathi plank.

When a fight broke out between groups of Marathi and north Indian medical students at Mumbai's JJ hospital last week, Shiv Sena was quick to take up the issue and claimed that Sena will always fight for the Marathi manoos.

In the last four decades the party has shifted focus more than twice, detractors say Shiv Sena is confused on whether to take up the Hindutva issue or the cause of the Marathis.

"They keep changing their priorities. They've shifted from Marathi to Hindutva ideology," Anant Gadgil, Congress spokesperson said.

Beleaguered Sena leader Raj Thackrey's announcement of resignation came as a shock to Shiv Sena supporters who now seem to take up any and every issue possible to generate public support.

"The politics of Maharashtra will change. The Shiv Sena has not done anything for Marathi people, except for emotional support," Kumar Ketkar, editor, Loksatta, said.

With Mumbai's demographics changing and the Marathi manoos in minority, Shiv Sena now has to rethink its strategies once again.

However, Raj Thackeray on Thursday said that for all technical purposes, he was still with the Sena. He added that though he had quit party posts, he continued to be a party member.

Raj?s remarks has led to speculations of a compromise between him and Uddhav. But his aides ruled out the possibility of a rapprochement.
