Delhi High Court has given MCD three weeks time to get its act together regarding the demolition drive in the Capital.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has given Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) three weeks time to get its act together regarding the demolition drive.

The Court says it will make alternative arrangements in case MCD cannot perform its duties.

The MCD on Friday had sealed over 500 properties as part of its drive against commercial establishments running in residential areas as traders threatened to launch a relay hunger strike from April 23.

As many as 514 shops and offices were sealed in ten of the 12 civic zones, while the sealing action has been completed in the city zone.

Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) General Secretary Praveen Khandelwal said during the past 20 days of the sealing drive, trade in the Capital has lost a business of over Rs 2,500 crore.

"We demand that the Union Government should immediately promulgate an ordinance or bring a bill in Parliament to regularise commercial establishments in the residential areas of Delhi," he said.

Meanwhile, Sangh ideologue Govindacharya, took part in the traders' dharna. He said the sealing of business premises in the Capital had dealt a big blow to a large number of families.

"Delhi and other cities have developed not because of government efforts but because the trading community put all its might in developing the city. Sealing business establishments is a big crime towards the family members of traders and their employees," he said.
