Meghalaya marriages to be registered
The Meghalaya government has framed draft rules for compulsory registration of marriages of different communities.

Shillong: In pursuance of a Supreme Court order, the Meghalaya government has framed draft rules for compulsory registration of marriages of different communities and asked people to give their views on it.

According to an official release, the state government framed draft rules under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, the Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act 1935, the Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872 and the Special Marriage Act 1954.

These draft rules, framed as per the Supreme Court order of February 14, are published in the Meghalaya gazette and posted in the state portal www.meghalaya.nic.in.

Copies of these were published in notice boards of respective deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers, it said.

The government asked the public to acquaint themselves with these draft rules and file their views, comments, suggestions and objections within 30 days of publication with the under secretary of the state excise, registration, taxation and stamps department.

Draft rule copies were also available with the above officer, the release added.
