CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday honoured Mother Teresa on her centenary year  by organising a function to recall her services to the poor.Addressing the gathering, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker D Jayakumar said, despite Royapuram having several points of pride, the establishment of Missionaries of Charity in the constituency was the greatest of all.“I had an opportunity to interact with Mother Teresa when she visited Chennai for two days in 1994. The speed at which the elderly lady used to walk was unmatchable,” Jayakumar observed.Recalling the good deeds of Mother Teresa, he detailed some of the welfare schemes launched by the AIADMK government.The Cradle Baby Scheme launched by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has saved the lives of 3,680 girls and 607 male babies, he said. “These children would have otherwise lost their precious lives due to foeticide,” he added.Earlier, Minister for Information and Special Programme Implementation K T Rajenthra Balaji gave a brief about the life history of Mother Teresa. Born in Yugoslavia, he said, Mother Teresa had come to India and had extended her helping hands to the underprivileged and needy people of the country. He said the Chief Minister was working hard for the development and growth of the State. Minister for Animal Husbandry, TKM Chinnayya, Minister for Tourism, S Gokula Indira, Minister for Social Welfare B Valarmathi, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy, former Speaker P H Pandian and many others also spoke on the occasion.A portrait of Mother Teresa was unveiled on the occasion.
