With heads bowed down in prayer and words of praise and thanks on the lips of everybody present, the Madras Medical Mission (MMM) celebrated its silver jubilee with a thanksgiving service here on Sunday.

Fond remembrances of the humble beginnings and the struggles faced by  MMM since its inception in 1987 made the silver jubilee celebrations sweeter for the guests.

Chief guest H G Yuhanon Mar Diascoros, the president of MMM, who addressed the gathering, said that thanksgiving was one of the greatest virtues in the world. “It is a time of remembering with gratitude, all the hardwork of the stalwarts who powered the institution to where it is today. If MMM has seen tremendous growth, it is all due to them,” he said.

After a brief history of MMM, presented by S Rajan, Director-Cardiac Surgery, founder-secretary Verghese Eapen took the stage and regaled the audience with his past memories of MMM. “When we started the Madras Medical Mission, we didn’t even have money to buy land with. We hired the premises of Vijaya Hospitals and it was only after we got a firm footing there, we began to grow,” he said.

He traversed several memory lanes and spoke about the hardwork MMM’s team put in to convince Vijaya Hospitals to rent out their premises, and the struggle they had to undergo to arrange funds for their first lab. “If all this has happened, it is because it is a miracle. That is why, instead of a grand celebration, we are taking this opportunity to thank god,” he added.

He urged doctors of MMM to see to it that they were always the cutting edge in technology. “We should utilise the help available, expand it and work for it. One day we will be at the top,” he said. “Let us do good for others,” he added.  Verghese also spoke about the other contributors to MMM like and reminisced about the roles they all played in the growth of MMM.
