THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Over the past two days, dark rain clouds have rolled over the horizon of Thiruvananthapuram. But that aside, August has turned out to be another dry month for the district. Thiruvananthapuram, despite its fame of being the entry point for the Southwest monsoon on the Indian mainland, continued to top the list in the matter of rain-deficiency this month also. India Meteorological Department (IMD) figures say Thiruvananthapuram received 39 per cent less rainfall than the normal between June 1 and August 24. Thiruvananthapuram is one of the three rain-deficient districts in the state this southwest monsoon season, followed by Wayanad (-33 per cent) and Kollam (-21 per cent). By normal standards, Thiruvananthapuram should have received 682.4 mm of rain between June 1 and August 24, but so far the total rainfall recorded is 417.4 mm. For the state as a whole, the 2011 southwest monsoon season has been okay with only - 1 percent deficiency recorded. The state received during this period 1,719.7 mm rainfall against a normal of 1,727.4 mm. Among the districts, Kozhikode received the most rainfall since June 1; 2,612.3 mm against a normal of 2,284.8 mm, a 14 per cent departure from the normal. The positive deviation has been greatest for Ernakulam, which recorded a 1,986.4 mm rainfall against a normal of 1,704.1 mm. Traditionally, Thiruvananthapuram has lagged behind other districts in the matter of southwest monsoon rainfall. Up to July 31, the district had received 35 per cent less rainfall than the normal. According to Sunday’s Met report, rain or thundershowers are expected in the state over the next two days.
