CHENNAI: Guess what could be the price for a motorman for halting his train in the event of trespassers being hit by a moving train? Attacks and abuses from the public. About one year ago, three students from a college in Minjur were killed while trespassing a track. Agitated by the incident, a section of students attached to the college blocked the railway track and began to target the motormen of two other EMUs that were moving on the section. But, the train drivers escaped from the assault by switching over to civil dress from uniform. At times, motormen are abused for halting trains after noticing strangers walking across tracks with an intention of committing suicide. Five days ago, an EMU train was halted by its motorman near Tiruvallur, after he sensed that somebody was planning to commit suicide. "As soon as I stopped the train, the furious stranger came near the cab and abused me with filthy words for my act," the motorman, driving the train, said. A Loco Running Staff, who recalled the incident, said, "The motormen would have been beaten up if they were found in their uniform. In fact, they mingled with the commuters to save their lives," This resulted in the motormen reporting for duty in casual attire from thereon, in a bid to take cover from unnecessary troubles.
