Sheopur: A 15-month old malnourished kid was branded with hot iron by a local Ojha (quack) in the name of curing his Pneumonia in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh.
The kid was branded with a hot sickle 30 times.
The toddler was rushed to government hospital after his condition deteriorated.
The victim Abhishek, son of a tribal man Suraj from Jwalapur village, was unwell for a while when he was taken to the quack for treatment.
According to locals, Abhishek was weak due to sukha, common term used for malnourishment in tribal belts. Locals suggested to his mother to seek treatment from the local ojha.
The Ojha after examining the child claimed that the kid suffered from pneumonia and suggested chechua. As part of this treatment, a sickle was heated up and the little boy was touched with the piece of iron almost 30 times in the stomach.
The bizarre 'cure', however, deteriorated his condition further.
Receiving information, a health volunteer rushed the baby to nearby district hospital through dial-100 service.
Notably, Abhishek’s elder brother Manish had died after undergoing similar 'treatment' in the past. Despite efforts from the health volunteers, the locals gripped by superstition, often land with quacks risking their lives.
The condition of the kid is said to be stable.
