New Delhi: Naxals posing as a football match’s spectators killed Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Sunil Kumar Mahato after overpowering his bodyguards, said Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Tuesday.
Around 40-45 naxals, including women, snatched guns and killed Mahato and two of his bodyguards, Patil told Rajya Sabha. "The Central Government has put in place a strong mechanism for monitoring naxal activities and for evolving strategies to counter and closely address the problem," he said.
"We certainly need greater concerted and cooperative efforts between the States inter-se as well as between the Centre and States to achieve more acceptable results."
The naxals also took away four rifles and ammunition from the bodyguards.
In Rajya Sabha, opposition members demanded a statement from government on Mahato's killing. As soon as the House met for the day, Digvijay Singh (BJP) raised the issue and asked government to clarify on conspiracy theories doing the round.
He said the Home Minister Shivraj Patil did not have time to visit Jharkhand.
