MTC bus mows down father-son duo

CHENNAI: A private security guard and his son died in a freak accident after an MTC bus hit their two-wheeler at Tambaram on Saturday. The driver, who was later arrested, told police that the accident occurred due to a break failure in his bus. Police said Kumarasamy (65), a private security guard of Jeeva Street, East Tambaram, and his son Murali (41), a tax collection agent for Chennai Corporation, were on their way to work in the latter’s two-wheeler when an MTC bus hit the motorbike. The bus,  plying between East Tambaram and High Court, dragged them to a distance of about 300 feet before coming to halt after hitting a four-wheeler.Murali, whose head was smashed, died on the spot while his father died while being taken to hospital.Murali, who used to collect taxes in Velachery area, would drop his father everyday in the apartment, where he was working as a guard. St Thomas Mount traffic investigation police, who registered a case, arrested bus driver Soundarajan (46). “The driver told us that he realised hitting a vehicle and applied the break in vain. He even stood on the brake but it was not working,” said a traffic investigation police inspector.
