THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: By the time schools reopen, vehicles are expected to ply smoothly through the Medical College-Pottakuzhy-Pattom route as the Murinjapalam bridge is all set for commissioning by the first week of June. Motorists and commuters on this busy stretch have been facing tough times after the demolition of the old Murinjapalam bridge in November last year. However, the work of the new Murinjapalam bridge and approach roads is heading for completion before the 200-day deadline set by the authorities. The progress of work ahead of the monsoon is a big relief to commuters on this stretch. “Work on the bridge and approach slabs have been completed. The construction of crash barriers and approach road is progressing. Vehicles could move across the bridge by the first week of June,” said P Madhavan Pillai, project engineer of Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB). The Murinjapalam bridge is part of the Corridor IX of the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP). Corridor IX covers 2.835-km of the Pattom-Medical College-Ulloor stretch. The total cost of the construction of the bridge is around ` 4 crore. Traffic snarls and poor condition of alternative roads have been giving trouble to motorists during the last six months. The alternative routes allotted to people going to Medical College from Pattom were, Plamoodu - Aanadiyil Hospital - Mulavana Junction - Kannammoola - Kumarapuram and Pottakuzhi - Gowreeshapattom - Mulavana Junction - Kannammoola. Chalakuzhi route was another one. All these roads were narrow, evoking much criticism from commuters. Meanwhile, the development works of the Pottakuzhy-Pattom Road and the Medical College-Ulloor Road are progressing.
