Mystery behind the sensational attack on 17-year-old girl B. Shamili, a first year Intermediate student, continues to perplex the police whose efforts to identify the assailants are yet to fructify.
Shamili was attacked allegedly by her co-students at the hostel of Gayatri Junior College, Gotlam of Bondapalli mandal in Vizianagaram district recently.
Vizianagaram district superintendent of police Kartikeya on Monday called on Shamili and enquired her about the incident. However, Shamili, who is still in a state of shock, was unable to respond to his queries.
Though a case was registered, the police are awaiting more details regarding the accused for further investigation.
Speaking to Express, superintendent of Government ENT Hospital, Visakhapatnam, Krishna Kishore said that Shamili was unable to speak as she was yet to to recover from the shock suffered in the incident which left her vocal chords damaged. He said the girl was given psychiatric treatment at KGH on Monday. Specialised procedure called video-laryngoscopy would be taken up on Tuesday, he said and added that she was stable. Krishna Kishore said Shamili’s vocal chords were damaged and she would be able to speak normally once she came out of the shock.
Bobbili DSP B Sridevi Rao said a case was registered under IPC 307 and the Andhra Pradesh Ragging Act 4 (1).
Meanwhile, despite her inability to speak, Shamili managed to give a written statement to the SP and the DSP who visited her in the hospital. However, she did not name anyone in her statement.
The SP said, in her statement, Shamili mentioned that some students tried to throttle her with a pillow while two others held her legs. She did not mention whether they were inmates of the hostel or outsiders.
The SP visited the hostel and inspected the rooms.
While questioning the director of the college in the case, the police are understood to have asked him as to why the management failed to lodge a complaint though the incident had taken place on July 18 night.
According to the police, 230 students are studying in the college and about 110 girls are residing in the hostel which is run by the college management. In Shamili’s room, there are 12 girls.
