Firaaq revolves around the Gujarat genocide of 2002.

Mumbai: As an actress Nandita Das has been associated with off-beat and meaningful cinema and so it doesn't come as a surprise when her first film as a director, Firaaq is based on an issue.

The movie is packed with powerful performers including Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal and Deepti Naval.

Firaaq revolves around the Gujarat genocide of 2002 and explores how violence affects our inner and outer lives.

"The film is actually set one month after the Gujarat riots. So the film is not in the thick of the violence, there is no violence at all,” says Nandita Das.

The actress turned director no doubt had a dream team of actors to work with and they too seem completely impressed by the first time director.

“I think she is a wonderful. I look forward to her next film and you cannot say that about many filmmakers today,” says actor Naseeruddin Shah.

“I did have my apprehensions as she is a wonderful actor herself so I thought what if she teaches me how to act but she gave me complete freedom,” says actor Sanjay Suri.

“She is great. She has a different way of looking at things, very organic,” adds actor Paresh Rawal.

“Very clear, precise and in terms of technicalities she was no different. She knew everything,” says actor Tisca Chopra.

Firaaq which has traveled across the globe to several festivals including the Toronto and London Film Festival was recently awarded the Best Film at the Kara Film Festival in Karachi, Pakistan.

“People there are very apologetic. They have had there Marriott, Babri Masjid, so I feel it was in a way good that we went there and the film has been appreciated there,” adds Nandita.

The team hopes their film gets a similar response back home as well.
