Ahmedabad:The bonhomie shared between the BJP and Congress over the Narmada Dam issue was too good to last.
The Congress has accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of trying to gain political mileage by blaming the Centre of trying to stall the dam work.
The Congress claims Modi sought a meeting of the Narmada Control Authority Review Committee (NCARC), which later voted against raising the height of the dam.
However, the BJP rubbishes the allegations and claims that the letter was written when Soz took charge as Water Minister.
“This letter is dated February 6, when Modi had actually congratulated Soz,” says Gujarat BJP Spokesperson Purshottam Rupala.
“Why is the Congress forgetting that there was a voting on the dam height issue in that meeting, and that Congress leaders voted against it,” Rupala adds.
In the meantime no party can afford to be seen as anti-dam because the Narmada issue is close to people’s hearts in Gujarat.
The war of words between the BJP and Congress is likely to intensify when Modi, who is currently in Israel to attend a workshop, returns.
