THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) has been asked to study the feasibility of a monorail project for the city. The decision was taken by the Cabinet on Wednesday.  ‘’The feasibility of a monorail project for the 28-km stretch connecting Kazhakkoottam and Balaramapuram will be studied,’’ Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting. ‘City Express’ had published a report on August 2 indicating that the monorail project may come up for debate in Wednesday’s cabinet.  Monorail is a rail-based transportation system based on a single rail, which acts as its sole support and guideway. The rail will be erected on a track upon the medians that bifurcate the main road. Land acquisition will be minimum as only junctions need to be widened to accommodate the passage. The proposed project is to connect Kazhakkoottam to Balaramapuram via Medical College, Thampanoor, Karamana and Pappanamcode.  Sources said that NATPAC would present a study report based on the Mumbai model. India’s first monorail, which is being constructed in Mumbai, will be commissioned in December this year. Recently, the Tamil Nadu Government announced a monorail project to connect 300 km in Chennai city.  Though the CM didn’t announce any time-frame for the study, the directive given to NATPAC is to complete the study as early as possible.
