THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Health Department,in association with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), has launched an awareness campaign on ‘normal delivery promotion, anaemia prevention and nutrition promotion’.  Health Minister Adoor Prakash on Monday released the promotional CDs, leaflets and brochures for the campaign at a function held in the capital.    The first phase of the campaign will cover the districts of Kollam, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram, the Minister said. The four-month campaign will include awareness campaigns on TV, radio spots, posters, distribution of leaflets and street plays. Classes, seminars and workshops led by expert doctors will also be held. The state is witnessing an alarming increase in the number of Caesarian sections, the Minister said. Statistics show that more than 50 per cent of the deliveries in the the districts of Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kollam are through Caesarian sections. The state is also facing the issue of malnutrition, the Minister said. The third National Family Health Survey has revealed that 30 per cent of the children in the state below the age of 3 do not have weight in accordance to their age. 21 per cent of the children had stunted growth. Over 50 percent of those in the 6-35 age group were found to be anaemic, he said.The Minister hoped the campaign would bring about a positive change in the state. Director of Health Services P K Jameela and NRHM director K Elangovan attended the function.
