BANGALORE: Some people are doing their bit to contribute to a greener and healthier Bangalore, that is slowly losing its plush green cover.Many young Bangaloreans are actively involved in it. The National Cadet Corps (NCC) of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology has launched a programme called Green Drive — a journey to save the environment.The cadets have taken an oath to protect the environment and committed to plant saplings and maintain them for at least three years.The program aims at creating an emotional bonding between individuals and trees and making people aware of the conservation and protection of the environment.The NCC unit has adopted the activities with the aim of imbibing amongst cadets selfless service to community importance of selfhelp and need to protect the environment.As part of the program, the NCC unit had organised a two-day program carrying the campaign on ‘conservation and protection of the environment.' Through a cycle expedition the cadets are keen on planting saplings throughout their way and making our city greener.Dr Vijaya Kumar HG, member Taluk Panchayat,Doddaballapura inaugurated the plantation drive to increase the green cover in the villages around the industrial area of Doddaballapura.He said, “Planting of more trees and plants will help in the beautification of the region besides contributing to a greener and healthier environment.” The cycle expedition by the cadets started from the institute at Yelahanka towards. Veerapura village, during which they planted more than 250 saplings and spread the message to protect the environment through plackards and meeting various people through their journey.After planting the saplings the cadets will also look after them in conjunction with the Forest Department.The NCC unit has also formed a relationship with the Gram Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat and Forest Department to help them promote afforestation, inculcate scientific understanding of the environment and environmental problems.
