THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A number to call your own; or to be more precise, to be known by a number. Some might balk at the prospect, but nearly one lakh people in the State - 30,000 of them in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation alone - have already signed up for the UID AADHAAR Scheme for a unique identification number. And going by indications, more people are in queue. Rural areas of the State account for close to 65,000 enrollments. In Kerala, the State Government is the UID Registrar and the IT Mission is the nodal agency. Three other agencies - Akshaya, KELTRON and IT@School - have been appointed to perform the enrollment. While Akshaya has been assigned the rural areas, KELTRON and IT@School are the implementation agencies for the urban areas and schools respectively. In every panchayat, Akshaya has two centres and 2,000 such centres are present across the State. Akshaya launched the pilot project in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha in February this year and so far the response has been good. The forms for enrollment are distributed through ward members. Enrollment has begun in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Wayanad, Kasargod and Malappuram also. ‘’People are well aware of the project and we are getting a healthy response. So far, 65,000 UIDs have been enrolled using some 120 units in the State. Among them, around 3,000 IDs have been generated. Nearly 120 enrollments are made a day on an average,’’ said Rejeetha Bimal, manager, e-governance, Akshaya State Project Office. Corporations and municipalities are covered under the urban area. Keltron launched the enrollment in Thiruvanathapuram Corporation in June. Around eight wards have been covered so far, with around 30,000 enrollments altogether. Eight centres have been functioning in the city at Nanthancode, Ambalamukku, Pangode, Pongumood, Manacaud, Mannammoola, Harvipuram and Poojappura. The consent of the district administration is necessary to start enrollment in a district. Work will start at Alappuzha on August 4. Centres are selected with the help of ward councillors. ‘’At times, one AADHAAR enrollment station may cover more than one ward at a place. Therefore, the stations are allocated in such a way that people who belong to the nearby Corporation wards can also enroll at the same centre,’’ says KELTRON general manager Nandini Devi. IT@School takes care of monitoring the UID process in schools through a school management software. Students from eighth standard to Plus-Two come under the process. Students are given a unique code comprising the school code and admission number in this regard. The data entered in the admission register in the school is taken for this purpose, like admission number, class and name of parents. Students will then be identified through the unique code for availing scholarships, generating progress report card, lesson planning, participating in sports and the like. ‘’A pilot project has been done in 14 centres across Kerala in one month which has elicited a remarkable response. Soon, the children will be issued the unique code,’’ said IT@School Director Anvar Sadath.
