HYDERABAD: It is impossible not to notice the imposing building of the Central Facilities Research & Development on the Osmania University’s sprawling campus. The centre, which came into existence in 2009, is unique as it is conceived to motive research students and industry bodies to give shape to their innovative ideas.“The CFRD has all the required scientific equipment with good laboratories which are used by research students from every stream,” explains its director Prof Venugopal Reddy. It’s not free though. Research scholars from the Osmania University are charged a nominal fee to use the facilities available at the centre. Students from other universities too can access the same facilities for a higher fee. Faculty members of the OU also can use the centre for research purposes. The centre maintains a record of every lab analysis conducted and also of students who come to use the facilities. For the students, the big benefit is its digital library which has about 40,000 e-books. The library has the same material that is available in the main library of the OU.However, since its inception, the centre has not been able to produce groundbreaking research projects. Till now, almost 700 users have registered with the CFRD and more than 7,000 samples have been tested by students from various departments. “Research is unpredictable and the quality of research undertaken here is very good. These things happen over a period of time,” reasons Prof. Reddy. The centre as its name suggests is for serious researchers and as such, is immune to protests and other disturbances on the campus. Even at the height of the Telangana agitation, the centre wasn’t shut down even once. “The machines in the lab are very complex and good care has to be taken. We make sure that at least for that purpose we are present here,” says Prof Reddy.
