KOCHI: CP Padmakumar, who passed away on Saturday, was a gifted filmmaker and a person with a special fondness for the spiritual flavour in cinema, said noted director T V Chandran.“I met him for the first time in Chennai along with Nedumudi Venu and Kavalam Padmanabhan. Pappan (Padmakumar) was about to leave for Hyderabad for the shooting of Aravindan’s Kanchana Seetha. Though all three of them were in a jovial mood and Nedumudi was singing, there was an air of reticence surrounding Pappan,” Chandran, who later became a close friend of Padmakumar, told Express.“We spent several nights discussing cinema and art. Pappan always talked fondly of G Aravindan, whom he called his master. Indeed, Aravindan’s death was one of the reasons why Pappan withdrew himself from the forefront of parallel cinema,” he added.Chandran said that ‘Sammohanam’, though screened at various festivals, did not get the recognition it deserved from Malayalis. “The movie was screened at various international festivals and was appreciated by viewers. But I do not think that the government or the audience gave enough recognition to such a good work,” Chandran said.
