The suspects were on their way to watch the ICC Champions Trophy matches in India, says Pak newspaper.

Islamabad: Nine Pakistani cricket fans, including three women, on their way to watch the ICC Champions Trophy matches in India have been caught with eight kg of heroin at the Wagah border checkpost.

Pakistan's Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) carried out the operation at Zero Point dividing the India-Pakistan border in Punjab following a tip-off, The News International newspaper said.

However, it did not cite the source of information in its Lahore datelined report.

Sixty-three cricket fans were cleared to go to Mohali via the road border of Wagah, but they were stopped at Zero Point for checking, the newspaper said.

Facilitated by the current peace process, thousands of Pakistanis cross the border to watch cricket in India, and there is a reverse movement when matches are played in Pakistan.

This is perhaps the first major narcotics haul involving cricket fans.
