BANGALORE: A surprise inspection at the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Contact Point in Sampangiramanagara revealed problems of absenteeism among the workers and lack of maintenance of garbage trucks.Chairman of the BBMP’s Standing Committee on Administrative Reforms, Krishnappa, along with other members of the committee inspected the Sampangiramanagara ward.“We hear a lot of complaints about cleanliness and some complaints about the lack of attendance among workers. So we decided to conduct this inspection to find out more about the exact condition of this ward”, Krishnappa said.It was found that only 13 out of 27 workers were present. The health officers and the environment officers were absent and unavailable when they tried to contact them. The inspecting team walked through the ward and asked the residents if their road was being cleaned properly. They also asked the workers about their work timings. They noticed that the cleaning staff did not wear their uniforms while on duty.Out of 40 garbage carts, only 24 were usable. The Mustering Centre at Sudhamanagar (ward no 118) was closed and there were no workers seen in the area.Krishnappa claimed that some of these problems were due to the ‘contractor mafia’.His team was very unhappy with the functioning of the cleaning staff in the ward, especially with their attendance.“I will write a letter to my seniors about this issue and we will decide on the action to be taken”, chairman Krishnappa said.
