KOZHIKODE: CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday admitted the party’s mistakes regarding Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and land acquisition issues at Nandigram and Singur in West Bengal. Replying to the discussions on the political resolution and the review report at the 20th party congress here, he referred to the criticisms levelled against him by West Bengal delegates on the electoral fiasco in Bengal. He admitted that the party’s earlier stand on the SEZ had created confusion and played a damaging role in the land acquisition issues at Nandigram and Singur. The party had supported granting SEZ status to certain projects in Delhi.The congress which entered the third day on Friday adopted the political resolution and the political review report accepting 349 amendments and 33 general suggestions made by the delegates.Two delegates from Andhra Pradesh, who pressed for the vote, were embarrassed as there was only one vote against the resolution.Karat stuck to the central leadership’s stance on various issues in his reply.Appreciating the participation of the delegates in the debate and the amendments moved, Karat said it reflected the unity of the party on the political assessment, review and future direction. He said all the state units had endorsed the decision to withdraw support to the first UPA Govt on the issue of US civil nuclear deal. Two other important resolutions for SC and ST rights and on Central Government’s mineral policies and for tribal rights were also adopted on Friday.
