Based on a true story of a Parsi family whose 10-year-old son went missing during the Gujarat riots, Parzania set off a storm at IFFI.

Goa: One of the most eagerly awaited films to be screened at the 36th International Film Festival of India Parzania, a film based on the Gujarat riots, has sparked off a major controversy with a section of the audience complaining that the film is biased.

Based on a true story of a Parsi family whose 10-year-old son went missing during the Gujarat riots, director Rahul Dholakia's film Parzania set off a storm at the 36th International Film Festival of India in Goa, where it was screened on Saturday.

A section of the Festival audience complained that Dholakia's film was biased in its depiction of Hindu fanatics wielding trishuls and swords, and felt the filmmaker did not paint an accurate picture of what actually happened during the riots.

Dholakia, however, is unperturbed by the accusations.

"A majority of the people who wtched the film were really moved by the story. There was just one person who made some noise. But that's his personal opinion and he's entitled to it," Dholakia said.

Starring Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika, Parzania has been cleared by the Censor Board of India, who asked for a handful of audio cuts which Dholakia says he has made.

Actor Naseeruddin Shah, commenting on the film and its surrounding controversy said: "The fact that its a film made on a real-life incident helps the viewer to connect to the story. Had it been a fictonal movie I don't think the impact would have been as strong."

The film premiered at the Pusan International Film Festival earlier this year, and is scheduled for release in India shortly.
