Peace in Vadodara, curfew relaxed
Security forces on alert for Friday prayers. Situation under control, says city police chief.

Vadodara: Curfew was relaxed for three hours on Friday for women and children in six police station areas of Vadodara. There has been no violence in the city since Thursday night.

Curfew was relaxed in Navapura, Vadi and City Police Station areas from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Curfew will be relaxed from 2:30 to 5:30 pm in Karelibaug, Raopura and Panigate,

City Police Commissioner Deepak Swarup said the situation was under control and the army, police and para-militarily forces are on alert.

An indefinite curfew was imposed in half the city on May 1 after four persons were killed and 22 were injured in clashes between the police and a mob.

Trouble started when a Corporation team accompanied by a police contingent began demolishing the over 300-year-old Dargah of Sayed Sarsiddin Baba to widen the road near the Champaneri Gate.

Objecting to the demolition, residents of the area threw stones on the municipal staff and the police. The police started a baton charge, fired teargas shells and finally opened fire.
