New York: Seventh-seeded Petra Kvitova was pushed to a third set before advancing to the second round of the US Open.

The 2011 Wimbledon champ beat Misaki Doi of Japan 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 Tuesday in a rare matchup of two lefties. Kvitova had 29 winners but the same number of unforced errors on a windy day.

The 92nd-ranked Doi fell to 0-4 against top-10 opponents. Kvitova has reached at least the semifinals at the other three major tournaments but has never advanced past the fourth round at the US Open.

In another match, no. 10-seeded Roberta Vinci overcame some shaky serving to win her first-round match in straight sets. The Italian, a quarter-finalist at Flushing Meadows last year, beat Timea Babos 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday. Babos converted all three of her break points, but Vinci broke the Hungarian's serve six times.

The 107th-ranked Babos fell to 1-6 in Grand Slam matches and 0-4 against top-15 opponents. Vinci reached a career-high ranking this summer at age 30. She made the round of 16 at the French Open and Wimbledon this year.
