Pipe Bomb: Accused held from Shoranur

Senthil, who was nabbed by the police team in connection with planting of a pipe bomb on the railway track near Piravom, had bought a tiffin box from Piravom, painted it black to make it look an old one and kept it in a pond near his house.

He brought the dial of an old clock and batteries from his house, while Santhosh brought the detonator, ammonium nitrate and diesel.

The duo assembled the bomb at this place and planted it on the track, about five km from Senthil’s residence around 12 am on Thursday with the intention for a blast.

On Thursday noon, Senthil accompanied a family to Shoranur as driver of the vehicle. When police started investigations centred on Senthil, he hid on the garret of the guest house where he stayed with the family who hired him.

The police team led by Vaikom CI K S Baby tracked him using the mobile phone signals and took him into custody. Senthil was charged with sections 4(a) and 5 of the Explosives Act and Indian Railways Act, section 150 (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck a train) and produced before Changanassery judicial first class magistrate court.

Both Senthil and Santhosh have criminal background.

Santhosh had been sentenced to three years’ jail term earlier and he is out on bail now. The police also suspect that some external forces could have helped Senthil, an electrician by profession, to make the bomb.

The investigation team lead by Palai DySP M Ramesh Kumar, Crime Branch CI Biju K Stephan and Internal Security Investigation team (ISIT) CI K J Peter quizzed Senthil at Thalayolaparambu police station.
