A writ plea was made in the Madras High Court for a direction to the authorities concerned to maintain all the hospitals in the State free from the menace of rodents, cats and dogs, on Tuesday.
In his public interest writ petition, filed through advocate RY George Williams, C Sadayan of Perambur submitted that the death of a 12-day-old female infant kept in the incubator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Triplicane allegedely due to rat bite on August 26 last, was a classic example of the lethargic attitude on the part of the authorities concerned.
There was something fishy in the cause of death of the baby, which the hospital authorities seemed to conceal.
Taking this into consideration, in the interest of public at large and to prevent reccurrence of similar incidents, it was necessary that this court should pass an order for proper investigation, the petition said.
The hospital premises had to be kept clean without the menace of rodents, pet animals like cats and dogs, to prevent aggravation of diseases and infections.
Hence, it was necessary to give specific directions to all the hospitals not to allow this menace to continue as the Indian Constitution guaranteed every citizen to live with dignity, advocate Williams submitted.
