New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday asked the police commissioners of Delhi and Mumbai to file reports within two weeks on police action against protesting students.
The NHRC said it had taken note of news reports about the lathicharge on medical and engineering students, who were peacefully protesting against the proposal to reserve 27 per cent seats for OBCs in higher educational institutions.
"If the allegations are true, they raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. No civilised state can justify use of brutal force on peaceful demonstrators," it said.
The NHRC ordered that copies of the news reports be forwarded to the two police commissioners. It requested doctors and medical students who are on strike to resume their duties.
"The right to proper and timely medical intervention and treatment is an essential feature of right to health care," it said.
Representatives of the Delhi Medical Association and Country First on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to NHRC Chairperson A S Anand.
Medical students in Mumbai braved police batons were lathicharged on Saturday when they blocked a road leading the Governor’s residence.
Hundreds of medical students in Delhi clashed with the police on Friday as they tried to march towards the Prime Minister's office against quota proposal.
