ROURKELA: With heatwave sweeping across Sundargarh district, at least six people have died of sunstroke in the past one week. Water scarcity and long hours of power cuts continue to take the sap out of life.Sources said Sundargarh town and its vicinity, which witnessed 46 degree Celsius for the past few days, saw a fall in temperature by a degree on Saturday. Rourkela city also reeled under sizzling heat conditions with mercury touching 44.8 degree Celsius on Saturday.There was no relief for the denizens after sundown either as the blistering heat left behind a sense of discomfort across the city. Long hours of power cuts aggravated the miseries _ two hours in the morning and more than one and a half hours in the evening.There was no record of unscheduled power cuts in rural pockets as some areas go without power for hours together, said Bijay Xalxo of Lathikata block.District Emergency Officer (DEO) Alomani Sethi said 10 alleged cases of sunstroke deaths have been received. Two of them were confirmed. While three deaths were not related to heatwave, the remaining five under verification.The DEO said all necessary precautionary measures were being taken. A control room at the collectorate is regularly monitoring the situation, the DEO added.
