The collapse of Eastern Power Grid crippled train services in Odisha as several trains had to be cancelled and many others stranded en route affecting lakhs of passengers.
With the power grid failing at around 1 pm, as many as 13 Express trains such as Puri-New Delhi Neelachal Express, Mysore-Howrah Express, Secunderabad-Howrah Falaknuma Express, Tirupati-Santragachi Express, Villupuram-Kharagpur Express, Dhauli Express, Pondicherry-Bhubaneswar Express and five local passenger trains were stranded at different stations under the jurisdiction of East Coast Railway (ECoR) division.
The unprecedented situation led to several trains running late while others had to be cancelled for the day. The 18413 Paradip-Puri Express and 22853 Shalimar-Visakhapatnam Express were cancelled from Paradip and Shalimar respectively.
The 22854 Visakhapatnam-Shalimar Express, scheduled to leave Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, has also been cancelled. Besides, passenger trains such as Cuttack- Palasa passenger, Cuttack-Paradip passenger, Puri-Angul passenger, Puri-Talcher passenger and Howrah-Bhadrak-Howrah passenger have been cancelled.
To meet the shortfall in train frequencies, 18302 Puri-Sambalpur Intercity Express and 18425 Puri-Durg Express will stop at all stations between Puri and Angul.
The ECoR officials, however, claimed that normal operations have resumed since late Tuesday afternoon. Due to power failure in the Eastern Grid, train services were disrupted for about one and a half hours. Services were partially normalised between Palasa and Bhadrak sections at 2.45 pm and fully resumed across ECoR division by 4.30 pm, the authorities claimed.
