The police are investigating all angles into the killing of a retired police officer at a mosque in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district. They said the incident was unusual for the area as terrorists do not kill people inside a mosque.
Mohammad Shafi Mir, who retired as a senior superintendent of police in 2012, was the local muezzin and was shot dead by terrorists while he was giving the call for azaan. The incident took place in the Gantmulla locality of the Sheeri area.
According to top police sources, Mir was killed using a 12 bore gun and six bullets were fired at him in the back. Usually, this type of a gun has not been used by terrorists in the past, sources said.
The sources further said terrorists have never killed anyone inside a mosque before, and the shooter in this case seems like a professional. The shooter fired from a window and hit a targeted part of the body, they added.
Most times, the killers are not as professional and fire in a scattered manner but this was a hardcore job using a 12 bore gun, the sources said. The shooter is a professional and practised well, they added. Hence, the police are not ruling anything.
The sources also said the area has a 12 bore gun in at least 40 homes due to animal invasions. So, it will be an easy job for the police to find the culprit behind this, they added.
