The incident of a Pune teenager’s reckless driving under the influence of alcohol that ended up claiming two lives has stirred up a political controversy after the opposition party questioned the role of police in “suppressing” the accident.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief spokesperson, Atul Londhe on Tuesday alleged that the teen was served “pizzas and burgers” at the police station and demanded “strict action” against the police officers involved.

A 17-year-old boy driving a Porsche car knocked down two motorbike riders in the Kalyani Nagar area of Pune in the early hours of Sunday, causing their death. The victims, a man and a woman, both aged 24 were techies hailing from Madhya Pradesh residing in Pune. Police have claimed the accused driver was drunk at the time after consuming liquor at a bar.
The teen driver was detained and granted bail in under 15 hours. The Juvenile Justice Board’s decision to grant the youngster bail on the same day while asking him to write an essay on road accidents has drawn criticism.
‘Pizzas and Burgers Served to Teen In Police Station’
Congress leader Atul Londhe further alleged that “pizzas and burgers” were served to the teen at the police station following the accident.
He questioned the lack of promptness from the police in initiating action against the accused and said, “Was there any political pressure on the police? People should get answers to this. All the police who handled this case should be suspended and strict action should be taken. Do other citizens get the same promptness and special treatment?”
Police arrested the father of the accused from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Tuesday. Sources said that the teenager, in his statement, mentioned that his father was aware that he had gone partying and drinking, and he had the car too.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed stringent action in the case.
“The chief minister, the deputy chief minister and home minister (Fadnavis), and the (Pune) guardian minister (Deputy CM Ajit Pawar) have given clear instructions to the police to take stringent action in this case. The state Director General of Police has also instructed for strong action,” Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, according to a PTI report.
On the allegations of “preferential treatment” being given to the accused while in custody after the incident, Kumar said strict action would be taken against the police personnel if they were found to be aiding the teenager directly or indirectly.
3 Arrested Accused Sent To 7 Days of Police Custody
The three people arrested in the Pune Porsche case including the father of the teen driver and owner and the managers of the bar who served him liquor, were sent to three days of police custody till May 24 on Tuesday.
