Kolkata: A father, who killed his budding table tennis player son for not measuring up to his grueling standards, was sentenced to seven years in prison by a West Bengal court on Tuesday.
The judge of the fifth fast track court in Alipore gave the rigorous imprisonment to accused Dipak Bhattacharya for killing 14-year-old Biswadip almost two years back with a cricket bat after the youngster failed to serve properly.
Judge Pradip Barman also imposed a Rs.2,000 fine on Bhattacharya and ordered an additional three-month jail term if he defaults on the money.
Biswadip, a national sub-junior player, died on January 8, 2007 at his south Kolkata home while practising with his father. The deceased's mother Papiya and sister Neha had pitched for life term for Bhattacharya.
"We're not very happy with the court order. We'll further move the high court seeking higher quantum of punishment for Dipak (Bhattacharya). We want life imprisonment for Dipak as he did such a heinous crime. He had killed Biswadip and he also used to torture me and my daughter Neha," said Papiya, the bereaved mother.
"He has only got a seven-year jail term of which he was already behind bars for two years. So, he will be in jail just for next five years. Once he is released, he will again torture me and Neha. Who will save us then," she asked.
The family members and neighbours of Bhattacharya alleged that he used to beat and torture his son inhumanly whenever the boy lost a table tennis match.
"My father should be given life term for his criminal act. When he comes out of jail, he will torture us in the same way that he used to do with my elder brother," Neha said.
Biswadip's former coach Tapan Chandra narrated an instance when Bhattacharya beat his son with a heavy object. "I took the boy to a hospital for an MRI scan. He had a serious head injury. Later, Bhattacharya came to me and shouted at me for taking his son to the hospital," said Chandra.
The coach said: "I had great hopes about Biswadip as he was a very promising player. He was a very obedient boy as well."
