CHENNAI: Water was released from Puzhal Reservoir on Friday night without intimating the public, causing hardship to the residents living downstream. Many people got stuck in their houses as roads were inundated.Close to 1,400 cubic feet of water was released from the reservoir and residents woke up at midnight to find themselves in knee-deep water. People stranded inside their homes were furious as they were not intimated by the authorities concerned about the possible water release.“Last time when the water was released in October, municipality officials intimated us in advance, but last night I woke up to find water almost entering my house,” Priyadarshini from the Balaji Nagar said. To add to their woes, electricity supply was cut off. She added that cars cannot enter the area, as the roads are submerged.Tamilan Nagar, Kanchi Arul Nagar, Dhanalakshmi Nagar and Meenakshi Nagar are the areas badly affected. Terence, a resident of Puzhal, said he could not go to his house after returning from a long journey.“I just arrived from Bangalore last night. Because of waterlogging,I was forced to stay with my daughter in Kilpauk. The path to my house was completely unreachable.” There were also fears of snake bites for those who attempt to wade their way out of their homes. “It is very difficult to get to a provision shop and there is no food in the house. I don’t know what to do,” R Lakshmi, a resident, said.Reservoir officials said that close to 800 cubic feets of water was released from the reservoir in October. Meanwhile, the residents are hoping against hope that water levels will recede.
