KOCHI: The Public Works Department (PWD) working women’s hostel in Kakkanad is set to get a new lease of life. The hostel was left idle for over a year. The PWD officials said that the hostel will be inaugurated by Minister of Public Works V K Ibrahim Kunju on Thursday. Benny Behnan MLA will preside over the function.Though, the hostel was constructed over a year back, it could not commence its operation as the furnishing work was not completed. Also, it could not procure electricity connection and the decision regarding the appointment of the staff took a lot more time than expected. As all the impediments have been removed, measures are on to purchase the required furniture for the hostel which has already gained an administrative sanction worth Rs 45 lakh.Rubco and Aluva Forest Industries of Travancore will distribute the necessary furniture for the hostel. P A Hashim, executive engineer, PWD (buildings) said that it is the due to the timely intervention of Benny Behnan MLA, District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth and chief engineer P K Satheesh that the hostel got an electricity connection. The hostel has 96 rooms and it can accommodate around 192 working women. The PWD has decided to allot these rooms to the women working in the public sector undertakings.However, priority will be given to the women working in the government sector. Hashim said that they have started inviting applications for renting the rooms. The hostel will have facilities like common room, sick room and amenities for indoor games.Those who do not have a permanent house within 20 kms of their office and those who have their office within a radius of 15 kms will be given priority. P A Hasim said that the application form can be sought from the office of the Executive Engineer, PWD, Edappally.The hostel was built by PWD a year back and was inaugurated with much hype by the previous LDF government. Since then it had been lying idle. The building was constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore.
