New Delhi: Brahmins may constitute less than nine per cent of India's most populous state Uttar Pradesh, but the BSP chief Mayawati is going all out to woo them.

Mayawati, on Thursday, demanded an amendment in the Constitution to grant reservation to economically and socially weaker sections among forward classes.

The move, apparently to pursue the upper castes, comes just ahead of the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

To form an egalitarian society, the Constitution should be amended to provide reservation facility to the weaker sections among upper castes, Mayawati was quoted by news agency PTI as saying while addressing a Vaish (trader community) conference in Lucknow.

"We want to create a society based on equality and justice and steps should be initiated to bring the economically deprived sections of every class in the main stream of the society," she was quoted as saying.

Mayawati, who has organised a series of Brahmin sammelans and bhaichara meetings to expand BSP's support base, said that neither she nor her party founder Kanshiram had ever given or approved of a derogatory slogan against upper castes.

She claimed that ever since the BSP was formed, it favoured to build up an equal society.

She added that there were always steps taken to popularise the party among the upper castes.

Appealing to the Vaish community to lend its support to BSP, Mayawati said unlike BJP, her party would ensure all round development of the community if voted to power.

Launching a scathing attack on Mulayam Singh Yadav government in the state, she alleged, "goons and mafias were ruling the roost and murder, kidnapping, extortion and rape had become the order of the day".

Holding BJP, Congress and RLD as equally responsible for the all "pervasive anarchy" in the state, Mayawati said that the Yadav government was the creation of these parties and they could in no way shirk from their responsibilities.
