KOCHI: The proposed rail link connecting Kalamassery and Thrippunithura through Thrikkakara Municipality is hung between the different views of the district administration and the people’s representative groups.The authorities have been giving contradictory statements on the proposed project, thus, showcasing the lack of coordination. Thrikkakara MLA Benny Behnan said the proposal has been dropped owing to the serious concerns raised by it. “The plan to connect Kalamassery and Thrippunithura is dropped as the proposed rail link would have passed through some densely populated areas affecting many people. To resolve this issue, a meeting was convened in the chamber of electricity minister Aryadan Mohammad, where it was decided to drop the proposal.Meanwhile, the District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said that the project is still pending due to the objections from the different sections of the society. On the other hand, the Kalamassery Municipality chairman Jamal Manakkadan said, “In the last meeting, it was decided that the further steps can be taken only after conducting a proper study.” He also said that the proposal was submitted by the Central Town Planning Department. However, except for the Kochi Corporation, the proposal was vehemently opposed by the Thrikkakara and Kalamassery Municipalities.As authorities continue to offer different versions of the issue, some sections have plans to continue with their protest. The Thrikkakara Residents Association Apex Council president T K Muhammed said, “We are going to register our complaint at the Chief Minister’s Public Interaction Programme scheduled to be held on Nov 19.” The rail line is proposed through the residential areas in the western part of the municipality which includes Karumakkadu, Vazhakkala, Olikkuzhi and Thuthiyoor.
