CHENNAI: The current wet spell across the State is expected to taper off after Saturday, according to forecasts by the Met department. Several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, have been experienced showers for more than a week now, since the onset of the North East monsoon. As of Tuesday morning, Sirkali and Pamban received TN’s highest of 9 cm rainfall, while Adiramapattinam, Mayiladuthurai (Nagapattinam), Radhapuram (Tirunelveli) and Tuticorin recorded 6 cm each. The city observatory recorded 6 mm and the airport observatory 35 mm on Monday and early Tuesday, respectively. “These rains are not due to well-marked low pressure areas, and the depression over Arabian Sea has also crossed the Saudi coast. These rains are normal monsoon activity, caused by easterly winds,” said a senior Met official, adding that the wet spell will continue till November 6, after which a downward trend has been forecast. The city saw heavy showers in the morning, affecting all office-goers. “I was stranded for 15 minutes under a bus shelter,” said Karthik, an engineer.
