THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The inaugural of bicentennial celebrations of the Thiruvananthapuram District Court became a joyous occasion for the legal fraternity in the capital city for more than one reason. Because, the ceremony also gave them an opportunity to celebrate, when Chief Justice Jasthi Chalameswar gave them a ray of hope regarding their long-pending demand for a High Court Bench in the city.The Chief Justice, while addressing the gathering on Wednesday, said that he would take up the matter before the Full Court of the High Court and try to obtain a positive response.There is another reason for the joy of the advocates here, that is it is for the first time ever that any of the High Court Chief Justices had made such a favourable comment regarding the issue.Earlier, there were allegations that it was the legal fraternity at the High Court who had been sabotaging the moves for a High Court Bench in the city. Hence, the Chief Justice’s comment also took the legal fraternity in the capital city by surprise.The Chief Justice commented on the issue after Ministers K M Mani and V S Sivakumar, who also addressed the gathering, urged the Chief Justice to take up the matter seriously.C K Sitaram, senior advocate and president of Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association, welcomed the words of the Chief Justice."With the Chief Justice making a favourable comment on the issue, now it is up to us to keep up the momentum by exerting pressure at the ministerial level,’’ said Sitaram, who also leads the High Court Agitation Council here. A team would also be despatched to the High Court to hold talks with the judicial officers there.However, he also told ‘City Express’ that the agitation, that has been idle for the past few months, was still technically alive and would resume, even though with a much less vigour, until the Bench was established.
