Mumbai: After a year-long gap, Mumbai finally has a new sheriff.

The hi-flying Vijaypat Singhania, Chairman Emeritus, Raymond, has been sworn in as the Sheriff of Mumbai.

Singhania, who made news recently for creating a world record with his hot air balloon flight, was sworn-in by Maharashtra Governor SM Krishna.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN, Singhania said public opinion would drive his agenda and that he would form a small committee of the people involved in various development issues and seek their advice.

"I think it would be unfair to say there's only one issue. There are many issues that require urgent handling. We'd like to build a public opinion and let every concerned citizen become a part of the world movement," Singhania said.

Singhania also expressed disappointment at the limited powers that are given to a Sheriff. But says that nothing much can be done to change that.

"I dont think government laws can change so easily," he said.

Unfortunately for him, the term will end within a year. But it really doesn’t matter as even five years is an insufficient time to shake up the system radically. That’s because it is widely acknowledged that the post is only ceremonial.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Maharashtra PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal were also present at the swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan.
