Rebel candidates pop up ahead of Assembly polls, say party should have consulted them before deciding whom to field in elections

Thiruvananthapuram Just when the UDF thought that it will live up to its name and put up a united front before Assembly polls, rebel candidates are out to ruin the party.

The Congress agreed to let DIC leaders contest 17 seats and is now unable to give its own candidates, including some sitting MLAs, tickets.

"These things have to be sorted out. The party can't take one-sided decisions. Discuss matters with us," said Sharat Chandra Prasad, a member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) executive committee.

A group of disgruntled Congress workers organised a protest on Tuesday. Pathanamthitta, Chathanoor, Trivandrum West, Perumade, Kottayam and Manarkad are areas where trouble is brewing for the Congress.

There are rebels in all these seats, five against the Congress and one against the Muslim League, the second biggest constituent of the UDF.

"We are going to put up an independent candidate. We are not going to accept their candidate," said Congress worker Sudaresan Pillai.

But the state Congress leadership says it won’t buckle under pressure and will take strong action against rebels.

"There won’t be any rebel candidates. Action will be taken against those who rebel," said KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala.
