NABARANGPUR: Maoist cadres are steadily making inroads into the Nabarangpur district. Sources said Maoists are not just entering the district from neighbouring areas of Bastar and Kanker of Chhattisgarh, but are also motivating villagers, particularly youths, to join the outfit. In the last one year, Maoists have created a base for themselves in the district and are now active in the border areas. They have already recruited a number of local youths from Raighar block of the district and are reportedly training them. Besides Raighar and Kundei areas, Maoist presence has been reported from Umerkote, Chandahandi, Jharigam, Maidalpur, Kodinga, Dabugam and Kosagumuda.Police said the activities are being controlled by Manpur divisional committee of Chhattisgarh which has three organisational committees. And, the operations are carried out by its Udanti-Raighar-Sinapali area committee.Cashing in on the poor socio-economic condition of the people in remote areas, the Maoists are finding it easy to spread their base. People in interior areas are devoid of basic amenities and benefits of government schemes. The ultras have also established a base in Gurumaiguda - a cut-off village under Maidalpur police limits bordering Kalahandi district. The village is home to several hamlets and has vast reserve forest that have become a safe haven for the Maoists. Around 40,000 people, mostly tribals, reside in these hamlets.Meanwhile, to curb Maoist activities, security forces have intensified patrolling. Special Operation Group and personnel of District Voluntary Force have been deployed in sensitive areas and frisking of vehicles is on at regularintervals. The recent surrender of hardcore Maoist and commandant of Udanti-Raighar-Sinapali border area committee Laxmidhar Nayak alias Gundadhul is considered as a good augury.
