A refugee knocked on the doors of Rehabilitation Commissioner seeking the release of her sister, mother of three, arrested for her bid to flee to Australia without travel documents, here on Tuesday. Nagula, (32), was arrested at Guduvanchery and lodged in Puzhal Prison for her attempt to flee the country on Aug 16, last.
Her family claimed that she had taken that decision looking for greener pastures for her children, Delakshan (12), Koushika (7), and Jathurshika(2) in Australia. Her elder sister Kamalambigai presented a petition to the rehabilitation department stating that her sister should be released from the prison considering the welfare of the children.
Since the Rehabilitation Commissioner K Deenabandu was not available, the petition was presented to Assistant Commissioner P Saraswathi. Speaking to Express, Saraswathi said that they had received the petition for the release of the mother of three. “We will recommend to the government to consider this request considering the plight of the children who were caught in the cross-fire,” she said. Kamalambigai who had also brought all three children of Nagu besides her two wards wondered whether she had to hire a lawyer to help release her sister.
The officials from rehabilitation department assured that it would not be required and her petition will be forwarded to the government for further action.
However, Kamalambigai persisted that she would have to hear it from the Commissioner who met her later in the evening and assured her in person.
Sources from the government said that measures were in place to sensitise the refugees in over 100 special camps in the State to shed the pursuance of Australia without proper documents which was quite dangerous.
