New Delhi: CPI(M) on Wednesday came out in support of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students, some of whom were arrested on charges of rioting late Tuesday night, and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop "authoritarian action" and get police off the campus.
Condemning the midnight crackdown, CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat likened the action to the one taken against students at Jadavpur University in Kolkata in 2014.
"Defending the indefensible by arresting students at #FTII. Jadavpur reenacted in Pune. Shame!"@narendramodi stop authoritarian action at #FTII. Release students and get cops off the campus," she said on Twitter.
Several students of Jadavpur University were arrested during early hours of September 17 2014 after they gheraoed vice chancellor of the varsity after failed dialogues with authorities in connection with alleged molestation of female student in the campus.
In a midnight crackdown, police arrested five students from the campus of the premier institute on charges of rioting after registering an FIR against 15 based on a complaint by the institute's director Prashant Pathrabe.
The arrests come after a group of striking students had on Monday gheraoed Pathrabe protesting against "irrational and unjustified" assessment of the incomplete diploma projects.
The students have been protesting the appointment of actor Gajendra Chouhan as the new chairman of the institute.
Speaking to reporters, party general secretary Sitaram Yechury seconded Karat saying the CPI(M) strongly condemned the action at the film institute and that "there should be dialogue and not such crackdown".
The party's Maharashtra unit also tweeted expressing solidarity with the students.
