'Remembering Indomitable Spirit of Soldiers': Modi, Kovind Salute Martyrs on Vijay Diwas Today
On December 16, 1971, 93,000 members of Pakistani troops raised white flags and surrendered to the Indian Army, ending the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday remembered the "indomitable spirit" of the soldiers, who fought in 1971 war. President Ram Nath Kovind also paid tribute to those who lost their lives while defending the country.

"Today on #VijayDiwas, we remember the indomitable spirit of the brave soldiers who fought in 1971. Their unwavering courage and patriotism ensured our country is safe. Their service will always inspire every Indian," PM Modi tweeted.

President Kovind, meanwhile, said, "On Vijay Diwas, we remember with gratitude our Armed Forces who defended our nation and upheld universal values of human liberty in 1971. In particular, we pay tribute to those who lost their lives in that valiant effort."

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat also greeted the Indian Army on the day. "Our heroic soldiers are always ready to protect the country, a tradition we are all proud of. The supreme sacrifice made by the brave soldiers to protect the country's borders would always be held in grateful remembrance by the nation," he said.

Ex-servicemen will also mark Vijay Diwas, which commemorates India's victory over Pakistan in 1971 war. A number of ex-servicemen who fought in the war participate in the celebrations, along with hundreds of NCC cadets and school children.

On this day, 47 years ago, 93,000 members of Pakistani troops raised white flags and surrendered to the Indian Army and ended the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The conflict was triggered by the liberation war of the present-day Bangladesh, which was erstwhile East Pakistan, to seek severance from West Pakistan.

"Without you (Indian Armed Forces), we would not have been able to attain independence so fast. Vietnam fought for nine years and we fought for nine months only and it was possible because of you," Bangladesh MP Quazi Rosy said on the eve of 'Vijay Diwas' (victory day).
